LEGIONNAIRE DOGS
Dear Columbia County Veteran:
First of all, hello, and we would like to shout out a big THANK YOU for your service. We hope that you are doing well. Many of you who came home from military service acclimated yourselves into civilian life without problems. Some of you did not. Some of you aren’t coping as well as you would like to. There can be any number of reasons: reluctance to seek help; lack of opportunity, or lack of resources, fear. We would like to help. The American Legion Post 57 has initiated a program called Legionnaire Dogs.
If you feel a companion dog, one who is your friend and listens and behaves well, would fit into your life, we can help you. If you are a veteran who would like a dog to provide protection for your home and family, we can help you; or a dog who is specialized in helping you in everyday life chores, we can help you.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to bring emotional stability, comfort and unconditional love from a dog through partnerships that change the lives of veterans. We have partnered with several correctional institutions where incarcerated veterans train dogs for companionship. We have also partnered with a local trainer, known for working with military, law enforcement and government agencies in the training of exceptional dogs. She will also help you train your companion dog, SERVICE DOG, or therapy dog.
If a veteran has no dog and would like one, we can help. If a veteran has a dog and it needs training, we can help. If a veteran needs a current service dog retrained, we can help. If a veteran needs a service dog/task oriented, we can help. Companion dogs are pets, dedicated to the love and comfort of their owner. Service dogs are working dogs. They will be trained to meet the needs of their particular owner. They will be certified as service animals. The only requirement that must be met before you apply is that you are able to maintain a stable home for the animal, provide food, water, shelter and of course, love.
THESE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED AT NO COST TO THE VETERAN.
We thank you and hope to hear from you,
The Legionnaire Dog Team at Post 57
